Chasing the Top Spot: How Indonesia is Revolutionizing Muslim-Friendly Tourism
The global halal travel market is booming, with Muslim traveler arrivals projected to hit 245 million by 2030. Standing at the forefront of this movement is Indonesia. Home to the world's largest Muslim population, the nation has launched an aggressive strategy to solidify its status as a world-class hub for Muslim-friendly tourism in Indonesia.
The efforts are paying off. In the 2026 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), Indonesia leaped to second place globally, tying with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and closely trailing only Malaysia.
The ACES Blueprint & Halal Villages
Indonesia’s success is driven by the Indonesia Muslim Travel Index framework, which uses the ACES blueprint to audit regional readiness across four pillars: Access, Communication, Environment, and Services. Currently, West Java, West Sumatra, and West Nusa Tenggara lead the regional rankings.
To guarantee peace of mind for observant travelers, the Ministry of Tourism recently partnered with the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) to issue 31,548 halal certificates to local businesses across 1,116 Desa Wisata (Tourism Villages). This ensures that authentic village stays, dining, and hospitality services strictly align with Islamic standards.

3 Premier Muslim-Friendly Destinations
Indonesia uniquely integrates faith-based amenities directly into world-class natural and cultural landscapes. The government is actively promoting 13 specialized hubs, highlighted by three standouts:
- Lombok: Known as the "Island of a Thousand Mosques," it features a 90% Muslim population, alcohol-free resorts, and easy access to prayer spaces alongside pristine beaches.
- West Sumatra: The ultimate hub for halal culinary mastery and immersive cultural tourism rooted in Minangkabau Islamic traditions.
- Jakarta & West Java: A blend of modern luxury and historic landmarks, home to the iconic Istiqlal Mosque (the largest in Southeast Asia) and cutting-edge modern mosque architectures.
By combining physical international sales missions with mobile-first digital tools on Indonesia.travel—providing real-time halal maps and prayer timings—Indonesia is establishing itself as the premier global destination for the modern Muslim traveler.
